I make small-scale paintings in oil, watercolour and gouache.

Up until recently, I mostly painted scenes of my day-to-day surroundings: usually sparse suburban landscapes or still lives.

At the beginning of 2024, I decided to change tack and embark on a series of History Paintings.

These new paintings feature figures from medieval history - except, really, they’re not.

These are painted from imagination. I do almost zero visual research: these are essentially what memory and preconception tell me Norman soldiers and princesses look like.

I would argue these History Paintings are abstract works, or at least the closest I can get to abstraction without relinquishising the subject.

I don’t fully understand what I’m doing in this new body of work. But they’re incredibly good fun, unbelievably liberating, and I’m looking forward to sharing more of them.

You can see more of my work on Instagram.
